Home Air Conditioning Systems, A/C And Heating

Each summer the heat waves are becoming more frequent and more intense. With temperatures rising it isn't surprising that the sale of home air conditioning systems is also on the rise. Before venturing out into the technological wilderness of home air conditioning, it's important to be aware of the different options and variables needed to create an ideal home climate.

There are three basic types of home air conditioning systems: room air conditioners, central air conditioning, and a heat pump. Room air conditioning is the most basic type of home air conditioning. The room home a/c unit is typically placed within a window and only cools the air of the room it is located in. The front end remains in the room and blasts cold air, while the back end sticks out of the window and expels hot air.

Room home air conditioning units are composed of either cooling coils or evaporators, a condenser, and a refrigerant-filled tubing. This particular home air conditioning operates by recycling the air and moisture already present in the room, cooling it, and circulating it back into the room. Room home air conditioners tend to be small in size, are easy to install, and cost between $80-$300.

The most popular type of home air conditioning system is central air conditioning. Central air is also known as a split air system, which operates by separating cold and hot air. Central air conditioning systems are usually located outside the home and work in conjunction with the home's central air handling system to distribute air throughout the home. Home central air handling systems can be either a furnace, ductwork, or heat pump.

Central air conditioning is popular mainly because, unlike room air conditioners, they have the ability to distribute cold air throughout the home. Also, central air is much quieter than room home a/c units because the actual unit is located outside the home. This unit is comprised of a large cylinder coil and fan to blow the air.

It's highly recommended that home owners consult a professional contractor before installing central air conditioning. Not all homes are compatible with central air. Ideally, a home needs to have a central air handler such as a furnace or ductwork in order for central air to work. Contractors are also needed to correctly install the central air system. Central air conditioning systems generally cost between $3,000 to $6,000. Home owners should also figure in the added cost of energy, since central air must be powered by electricity in order to work.

Heat pumps can also be considered a home air conditioning system. Heat pumps function as both a home heating system and home cooling system. During the winter, a heat pump operates as a heating system by taking hot air from outside and circulating it throughout the home. During the summer, the heat pump functions as an air conditioning system by taking hot air from the inside of the home and expelling it outdoors. Pricing for heat pumps is determined by size and usually ranges between $500 to $3,000.

It's also important to be aware of a home air conditioning system's energy efficiency rating. The U.S. Department of Energy has established a rating system to reduce waste and to make sure that all air conditioners meet the minimum energy efficiency requirements. As of January 2006, all home air conditioning systems are required to have a minimum Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating (SEER) of 13. It's important that home owners keep this in mind when shopping for home air conditioning. Generally, the higher the rating, the more energy efficient the home air conditioning system.

Home air conditioning systems are available in a variety of sizes, prices, and cooling features. They can general be purchased at home improvement stores such as Home Depot and Sears, or through online vendors and manufacturers. Some well known air conditioning companies include Carrier, Trane, and Lennox.

Don't waste another summer melting away in the hot hot heat. Invest in home air conditioning and enjoy the cool splendor of an air conditioned home. It's important to research and choose a home air conditioning system wisely. A home's size, insulation, and air circulation system should all be taken into account before deciding on an a/c system.
